Care and Maintenance of Hardwood

Before Initial Use - Application Instructions

  1. Using a clean white cotton cloth (or a 2500 fine-grit sanding pad, as we use at MESI Woodshop):

    • Sparingly apply MESI Wood Conditioner to the cloth or sanding pad.
    • Gently rub the conditioner onto both sides of the wood surface using circular motions.

  2. Once the piece is completely covered:

    • Wipe the surface from end to end to remove any excess conditioner.
    • Let the piece rest for 30–60 minutes to allow the conditioner to be absorbed into the wood.

  3. Using a clean white cotton cloth:

    • Buff the surfaces until all excess conditioner is removed and the wood feels smooth to the touch.

Care and Maintenance

To keep your wood in its best condition, treat it regularly with MESI Wood Conditioner:

  • Apply conditioner once a month or whenever the surface begins to lose its luster.
  • During dry seasons (like winter) or in low-humidity climates, conditioning may be required more often.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Always wash both sides of the wood to prevent uneven moisture absorption, which can lead to warping.
  • Hand wash with warm, soapy water—do not submerge or use a dishwasher, as this can cause the wood to warp or split.
  • After cleaning, wipe dry and allow the wood to air dry completely.

Removing Stains:
For stains from fruits or vegetables (e.g., beets, berries):

  1. Create a paste with:
    • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
    • 1 tablespoon of kosher salt
    • 1 tablespoon of water
  2. Rub the paste onto the stain with a sponge.
  3. To remove unwanted odors (e.g., garlic, onions), add a little lemon juice to the paste.

Maintaining Surface Smoothness:

  • Over time, you may notice the surface becoming slightly “fuzzy” when dry.
  • To restore smoothness:
    • Lightly buff the surface with the provided sanding pad.
    • Reapply MESI Wood Conditioner as detailed above.

There’s no universal formula for wood care, but following these steps will help your piece last a lifetime.
